PEXA is transitioning away from USB hard tokens and CD based soft certificates, as previously communicated, to offer our new mobile signing solution to improve the overall signing experience for our customers.
Effective from 31 March 2026 PEXA will no longer be able to support PEXA issued USB hard tokens and CD based soft certificates, and will be providing limited assistance for existing USB hard tokens and CD based soft certificates until 31 March 2026.
Mobile signing uses encrypted digital certificate signing technology on your mobile device to enable you to securely apply your digital signature in PEXA Exchange via Cogito Group’s Signing App, called Jellyfish Mobile.
Soft certificates can no longer be obtained directly from PEXA.
If you wish to sign using soft certificates you will be required to source your own soft certificate through a Gatekeeper-accredited provider, such as Cogito Group or DigiCert.
We understand that these changes may raise questions, read through our FAQs below and visit our Help Centre for more information.
We would like to confirm that from 31 March 2026, all USB tokens and CD based soft certificates will no longer be supported, and customers will be encouraged to switch to our new convenient and secure mobile signing option.
Our current Digital Signing Certificate supplier has decided to phase out their Gatekeeper infrastructure- the security system that controls and verifies access to network. As a result, PEXA is transitioning away from USB hard tokens and CD based soft certificates to offer our new mobile signing solution to improve the overall signing experience for our customers.
To make the switch easier, we have functionality available within PEXA Exchange so you can transition your firm’s users as their USB hard tokens and CD based soft certificates expire.
Yes, once you have chosen your new signing solution, you will be refunded for the remaining balance on your active USB hard token or CD based soft certificate.
The refund amount will be calculated from the date you create the new mobile signing certificate or when you purchase the new Gatekeeper-accredited provider soft certificate, such as Cogito Group or DigiCert.
A reminder that the full cost of a new mobile certificate will be charged to a customer if their actions result in the loss or the need for a replacement certificate (for example, if you lose or replace your phone). For details on when this applies, please read through our Help Centre article.
ARNECC requires PEXA to support only Gatekeeper-accredited PKI digital certificates via the MOR under section 7.6: Digital Certificate regime.
This includes the stipulation the provider must be independent of PEXA and not restricted to closed environments or communities of interest.
In addition to these changes, we will reduce the duration of the mobile signing certificate from a 3-year to a 1-year mobile certificate.
This change is designed to provide greater flexibility while enhancing security through more frequent device updates.
This change will come into effect for new mobile signing certificates from 7 January 2026.
Note, customers with an existing 3-year mobile certificate will not be impacted by this change. However, after 7 January 2026 only 1-year mobile certificates will be available for purchase.
As a result of hard tokens no longer being supported, hard token renewals in PEXA Plus will be decommissioned.
If you have expiring token(s) you will need to switch to mobile signing or self-source a soft certificate via a Gatekeeper-accredited provider.
If you are unable to use mobile signing, you will need to source your own soft certificate through a Gatekeeper-accredited provider, such as Cogito Group or DigiCert.
Please note, USB hard token or CD based soft certificate can no longer be obtained directly from PEXA.
