‘Hacking’ the PEXA induction experience

By PEXA • Sep 2024

Starting a new job can feel overwhelming. There are plenty of people to meet and names to remember, and a litany of policies, procedures and documents to familiarise yourself with. A great induction experience is essential to cut through the noise and offer much-needed support for excited newcomers, bolstering retention and employee satisfaction.

PEXA’s previous induction process involved quarterly meetings where new starters sometimes had to wait up to three months for an induction session. These sessions weren’t reflective of PEXA as an organisation, and logistically challenging to organise,” said Sean Goodman.

Sean, Chanh Kien and Anna Smith are three of PEXA’s People Experience employees. They recognised an opportunity for improvement in the induction experience, and so developed a pitch for PEXA’s 2023 Hack Day – an annual internal event where employees present innovative ideas to a Shark Tank-style panel of Executives and Senior Leaders, hoping to garner sponsorship to bring their idea to life.

“Hack Day initiatives are crucial for fostering innovation and harnessing the power of diversity, as they invite everyone in PEXA to offer their perspectives and solutions,” said Sean.

They proposed to develop a LinkedIn Learning pathway that uses dynamic video content to turn a tedious process into an engaging, entertaining, learn-at-your-own-pace experience. Their creative idea won them endorsement from PEXA’s Group Chief People Officer, Sabina Sopov and the Hack Day “CEO’s Choice Award” from Managing Director and CEO, Glenn King. With that, they began the mammoth task of planning, approving and executing their idea, with the help of Trent Cliffe, PEXA’s Videographer.

“Over the past year, we’ve written seven scripts, developed content with help from more than 190 employees, scheduled over 35 filming scenes for seven videos, developed a LinkedIn Learning pathway and six additional onboarding resources, presented our project to PEXA’s Board, and hosted a successful launch event in July,” says Chanh.

Since its launch, the revamped induction program has already helped seven employees to onboard to PEXA, and provided an induction refresher to more than 200 staff watching online or at the premiere screening.

On the project, our Head of Learning and Organisation Development, Ahlam Haddad said: “This induction is a true testament to the power of collaboration at PEXA. Through the dedication and combined efforts of so many talented legends at PEXA, we’ve crafted an experience that not only welcomes but inspires our new team members. This is more than just an induction—it’s a game-changing approach that sets the stage for success from day one. Proud of what we’ve achieved together!”
