Privacy and risk leaders from some of the nation’s largest organisations gathered in Melbourne as part of Privacy Awareness Week – facilitated annually by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).
This year’s theme was “power up your privacy” – a rallying call for people, organisations and agencies to ensure their privacy fundamentals are robust and practices are open and transparent.
The boardroom event, hosted by the PEXA Group, provided the opportunity for professionals from a range of industries to discuss emerging privacy trends, evolving community expectations around data use and the importance of protecting personal information.
The ongoing AI discussion
A key theme discussed this year was AI governance. The use of artificial intelligence is predicted to grow by more than 25% each year for the next five years and could contribute over $15 trillion to the global economy by 2030.
AI can provide great benefits across organisations who leverage it safely, but it is clear frameworks and governance enabling consistency and responsibility remain key elements to AI’s successful implementation.
Key principles that support good AI governance include privacy, transparency, security, explainability, fairness and human oversight.
As the PEXA Group continues to grow, leveraging data in an ethical manner, in addition to considering the nuances of AI, remains critical to our business. To support our business utilise AI in the right way, we have established our Ethical Advisory Committee to guide our business on the evolving technical and legislative landscape we operate within.
We’re proud to be an official supporter of Privacy Awareness Week – which plays an important role in raising the awareness of privacy and its importance within our communities and industries.
Ultimately, organisations are working to ensure their customers are protected. Events like this continue to support knowledge sharing, best-practice insights and positive benchmarking to ultimately support the growth of privacy practices across industry.
